Owner of Muratie, Rijk Melck, left, chats to John Smith, a retired SAA pilot from Somerset West, whose passion is vintage aircraft and cars - as the wind gusts rattled the canopy and the rain lashed down outside - providing no deterrent to the many guests enjoying themselves inside.
Bolander headed out on a wild and wet Saturday to attend the Muratie Retro Rouge Festival, on the far side of Stellenbosch towards Paarl, where guests and visitors to this historic estate were assembled in their wonderfully-snug Canvas Venue, kept warm by all the gas heaters, and good food, music and wine.
The victuals on hand were hamburgers, vetkoek stuffed with curried mince, samoosas, home-made brownies, barista coffees and, of course, all the vintages on offer by estate (including some older ones with marvellous labels.
Owner Rijk Melck spent time mingling and chatting to guests, accompanied by his faithful old German Shepherd, Saartjie... and if anyone is interested in the history of this exceptional estate, he leads regular tours and historic talks, after which guests can enjoy a hearty meal in the restaurant.
