There will be a combined birdathon, festival and family fun walk at the False Bay Nature Reserve, on Saturday October 19.
It is run by the City of Cape Town, the Cape Town Environmental Education Trust, BirdLife South Africa and the Cape Bird Club.
Each child who completes the 4km, 5km or 6km fun walk through the reserve’s Strandfontein Birding Area will get a medal and an activity book. Registration is from 8am to 10am at the picnic area on Zeekoevlei’s eastern shore. You can start walking anytime from 8.30am to 10am.
The festival will start at 9.30am. The Steenberg High School Wind Band will perform. There will be a bird display by Eagle Encounters Raptor Rehabilitation Centre, a reptile show by the Cape Reptile Club and a display by the Metro police dog and horse units. The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, Shark Spotters and BirdLife will also be there. Adults can get basic health screening done.
The venue will be signposted from the entrance off Flowerpecker Street. Entry is R5, with proceeds supporting conservation at the reserve. Contact Vicky Johnson at events@cteet.co.za or visit the event on Facebook.
