According to Nedbank, significant growth in SA is being fuelled by mobile internet penetration in the country with around 80% of the population having mobile internet access, mostly on smartphones.
"Although the growth in video streaming via mobile devices has not yet exerted much downward pressure on data prices, mobile data packages are cheaper and more accessible than fixed-line connections for most South Africans," Nedbank said.
Another benefit is that when load shedding hits, people can still access streaming platforms on battery-powered devices with a wireless internet connection.
Nedbank said that for households on a tight budget, getting streaming services through mobile devices can be much more affordable than using fixed-line internet as well as cheaper than a satellite subscription.
Here are some tips to save costs on streaming:
- While each service has its own subscription fees, buying a package of various services may be more cost-effective.
- Research options for internet provision depending on the needs of your household. You will need a stable source of broadband internet, or you may decide to invest in a smart TV.
- Older TVs can also usually be connected to laptops, desktops or mobile devices through a cheap HDMI cable connection, allowing for bigger screen for streaming.
