As Valentine's weekend approaches, South African fans will have the chance to experience the stirring sounds of the internationally acclaimed indie-folk band, Hollow Coves.
The duo are currently in the country for their "Nothing to Lose" tour.
Set against the picturesque backdrops of Marks Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, February 15, and uMphafa Field within the stunning Botanic Gardens in Durban on Sunday, February 16, audiences are set to revel in an enchanting musical experience.
As they prepared for their South African debut, band members Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins shared their musical journey with “Independent Media Lifestyle”.
Ryan, who initially had little interest in music, began his creative exploration with the acoustic sounds of the Australian duo Angus & Julia Stone. This shift ignited a passion for music that led him to pick up the guitar and experiment by recording covers.
His chance encounter with Matt, facilitated by a mutual friend, would eventually transform their casual interest into a thriving music career since the duo began collaborating in 2013.
“We had no expectations,” Ryan recalled. “But then, one of our songs just blew up on SoundCloud.”
Reflecting on their journey, Matt described their ascent as crazily transformative. “It’s been amazing.
We’re so grateful we’ve been able to do this because not many people have this opportunity,” he stated.
Unlike many artists who spend years honing their craft before experiencing a breakthrough, Hollow Coves found success with some of their first songs.
This rapid rise has involved a steep learning curve but positioned them confidently to engage their audience through intimate performances and thoughtful songwriting.
The excitement among South African fans is palpable, as they anticipate the unique experience of enjoying music alongside captivating scenery.
In their upcoming shows, audiences will be welcomed into an enchanting environment enhanced by the duo’s acoustic sound.
“We’re going to promise them the best time ever,” Ryan raved, envisioning the extraordinary vibe of performing on a creek, a novelty they have yet to experience.
Hollow Coves embodies a lyricism that provides touching reminders to appreciate the beauty of both the self and the natural world.
Their latest album, “Nothing to Lose”, produced by the talented Matt Corby, continues to explore themes of connection and introspection, encouraging listeners to embrace life’s transient moments.
The duo has garnered over half a billion streams worldwide, with their heartfelt songs resonating deeply with fans seeking solace through music.
The duo’s rise to fame began with their debut EP “Wanderlust” in 2017, which was inspired by their collective travel stories.
Soon after, their songs became anthems for outdoor adventures, solidifying their reputation. The popularity of their track “Coastline”, which became a viral sensation, served as a testament to their ability to capture and narrate the essence of life.
As they gear up for their performances, Hollow Coves promises fans a night to remember, filled with serenity, music, and genuine connection.
The lush landscapes of Durban and Johannesburg will serve as a fitting backdrop for the duo’s unique sound and emotional storytelling, ensuring that this will be an event not to be missed.
