The Lockdown has made us reassess our grooming priorities.
If an extended lockdown and time away from regular hair-cuts has taught us anything, it’s that self-sufficiency is key. And in tonsorial terms, there are few styles easier to maintain at home than the buzz-cut.
Mena Massoud knows that, and has recently shaved off his splendid quiff. The result is, we’re pleased to say, excellent.

Blessed with a low hair line and movie star good looks, the star of Aladdin and our breakthrough talent award winner 2019, took the plunge, and a short crop really suits him. He wasn't the only person to adopt a buzz cut either. David Beckham shaved his head back in April at the beginning of the lockdown.
It’s not just the aesthetic values that this haircut should be judged on, handsome as it is. Instead, its benefits are felt in various different aspects of your life.
First off there’s time. Quite apart from the time you’ll save at the barbers trying to communicate the angle of the side parting you want, there’s zero drying and styling time required. Imagine the unbridled joy of stepping out of the shower, rubbing your head with a towel and you’re done.

There’s also a certain freedom that comes from having hair which will look identical every day. It’s why Steve Jobs always wore the same turtleneck sweater and New Balance sneakers, to reduce what he called decision fatigue. Wake up, look in the mirror, you look the same as yesterday. Easy.
Next is maintenance. If you’ve purchased your own clippers and you’re doing this yourself, what’s stopping you from tidying up your crop on a weekly basis? No bad hair days every again. Which leads us on to cash.
Look, times are tight, the pandemic has effected us all. If you can save some money shaving your own head then so be it. Just remember to head back to your barber’s once you’re ready for something more advanced than a number 2 all over.
