Admit it, the Golf gets your pulse racing, doesn’t it? Picture: Supplied
I REMEMBER the first Volkswagen Golf I rode in. Note, I didn’t drive it. I was just a passenger, but be that as it may, this car left a lasting impression.
It was back in the early 80s. My brother’s friend had just bought a brand new silver Mk1 GTI. It had aluminium wheels and a red stripe running the length of the vehicle and to me it was the most beautiful vehicle I had ever seen … well, next to Knight Rider’s KITT perhaps.
The fabric on the seats, the clunk of the doors, the clicking sound of the indicators, the smell of the car inside and especially the black golfball for a gearknob all made my head fizz – well, that’s what it felt like anyway.
In any event, emotions aside and looking back more soberly, the VW Golf has been in the country since 1978 and still turns heads to this day.
The good news is that in Kariega, during February 2025 Volkswagen introduced the new entry level Golf that will be launching in the first quarter of 2025.
According to the information on hand, the new Golf impresses with a next-generation infotainment system, a more intuitive operating concept, a sharper front and rear end design as well as efficient drive systems.
That will really be something, because I remember how nippy my brother’s friend’s silver GTI was. I could not believe the acceleration and handling; and being a teenager at the time, it took a lot to impress me!
Revamped front and rear and new light design.
The new Golf can be recognised by its new front end.
