South African celebrities who have levelled-up their fashion game
Some South African celebrities were notorious for not rising to the occasion when it came to fashion. They wouldn’t adhere to themes at red-carpet events and were also trolled by fans.
For example, at this year’s Metro FM Awards where the theme was “Back To The Future,” media personality, Zanele Potelwa, who was the red-carpet host disappointed many by wearing leggings.
As the host, everyone expected her to dress up but she did the opposite.
Nonetheless, there are those celebrities who take their fashion sense seriously and elevate their wardrobes. Some of them have been on the bad side of fashion but we are glad they finally saw the light and now rank among the best dressed.
Shauwn Mkhize
The Durban tycoon who is currently investigated by the hawks was one of the most expensive celebs known for her poor taste in fashion.
She would wear designer clothes and still miss the mark. However, all of that has changed and she now knows how to coordinate her outfits.
From casual to formal looks, she is always dressed to the nines. One of her best looks was when she hosted a royal-themed gala with her family and wore a vintage dress. And then on Heritage Day, she donned a beaded dress to celebrate her Zulu culture.
“A celebration of the rich and diverse cultures, languages, and traditions that define South Africa. This day is a powerful reminder of resilience, heritage, and hope.
“It signifies a connection to ancestors who fought for freedom and dignity, inspiring us to honour our roots while building a brighter future. Happy Heritage Day,” she said at the time.
Lasizwe Dambuza
The media personality went from wearing towels and childish rompers on red carpets to being one of the most styled gents.
The “Awkward Dates” host unleashed a dapper fashion sense this year. All thanks to his stylists Lesego Kgosimolao and Mbali Rose Ntuli, who have both styled him for different occasions.
One of our favourite looks was the 5th Ave Fashion suit he wore at some event. The high-waist pants and the cropped jacket were the perfect combinations because those pants snatched his small waist nicely.
Boity Thulo
This year, the rapper cemented her status as a fashion icon, not only by being invited as a VIP guest at Paris Fashion Week, but by collaborating with multiple fashion brands.
For example, she starred in the Thebe Magugu Lobola Heritage Dress campaign and recently released a summer collection with True Religion.
Besides all of that, Thulo also knows how to dress for the occasion. At the Presidential Inauguration in June, she looked classy in a Khosi Nkosi dress and most people were impressed.
Sjava
The musician has always loved South African cultures. This year, we saw him embrace not only his Zulu culture, but other cultures like Sotho. He also partnered with Omega to release a range of stylish sandals.
"I feel like my style has always been a blend of different trends, cultures and eras. I'm easily able to style a very traditional or cultural piece of clothing in an urban way.
“I enjoy fusing elements into my style and, for me, Omega has been a shoe that allows me to be versatile - I can wear it however and it's still hot. It's modern but at the same time represents the real style of yesterday.
“It's urban and rural. It's just timeless, and I'm excited for more people to discover Omega through this new range,” said the multi-award-winning musician.
Selby Mkhize
The Ukhozi FM presenter found her style and ran with it. Mkhize has always loved dramatic fashion but didn’t know how to execute her ideas.
This year, we saw her dazzling and flamboyant dresses look good on her. We also love how she supports local designers and one of our favourite looks was the lemon Muzi Mlambo dress she wore at her colleague’s wedding Jacinta MaNgobese Zuma.
Next year, we anticipate more celebrities coming out of their shells, investing in stylists and looking their best.
