Durban - Opposition parties have called on the local and provincial government to act swiftly following the floods in Msunduzi Municipality that have affected 35 homes and caused road and infrastructure damage.
The DA in Msunduzi has called on KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Sihle Zikalala to declare a local state of disaster in the municipality.
"The lack of proper planning, mismanagement, and lack of prioritisation and political will to ensure that this city is prepared for natural disasters is now fully exposed once again, not even a year after the December 2021 storm damage," said DA Msunduzi caucus leader Ross Strachan.
The IFP in KZN extended its sympathies to the affected communities and called on the government to urgently assist them with safe temporary accommodation, at halls and churches, as the bad weather was likely to extend to the weekend.
“We would like to ask all residents in and around Msunduzi Municipality, especially those living in low-lying areas, to remain vigilant, as this is the season for storms and floods. The local community is still recovering from flooding over last December and January, where floods left about 200 families homeless.”
