Sub-council 3 chairman Phindile Maxiti and his colleagues
Councillors took their seats and pledged to serve their constituents at the inaugural Sub-council 3 meeting at the Milnerton municipal building, in Bridle Way, last Thursday.
Phindile Maxiti, the sub-council’s new chairman, was given a warm welcome by other councillors and his predecessor, Ward 5 councillor Helen Carstens, when he walked into the room after being elected.
He is one of the five DA proportional representative (PR) councillors on the sub-council.
Sub-council 3 has lost Ward 70, which covers Blomvlei and Bellville, to Sub-council 7. Ward 107 has moved from Sub-council 3 to Sub-council 1, where councillor Nicky Rheeder has been appointed as the new sub-council chairperson.
Sub-council 3 is made up of wards 1, 4, 5, and 113.
Ward 1, with councillor Cheryl Visser, covers Baronetcy Estate, De Duin, De Grendel Farm, Kaapzicht, Kleinbosch, Monte Vista, Northgate, Panorama, Plattekloof 1, Plattekloof 2, Plattekloof 3, Plattekloof Glen, Sonnendal and Welgelegen.
Ward 4, with councillor Anthony Benadie, covers Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton Ridge, Montague Gardens, Phoenix, Royal Ascot, Summer Greens, and Sunset Beach.
Ward 5, with councillor Helen Carstens, covers Annandale Farm, Atlas Gardens Business Park, Bothasig, Edgemead, Burgundy Estate and Cape Farms,
Ward 113, with councillor Joy Solomon, covers Westriding, Killarney Gardens, Sunridge, Flamingo Vlei, Killarney Gardens, Milnerton, Parklands and Table View,
Peering over his spectacles, Mr Maxiti addressed his colleagues in a low, deep voice and said he was excited to be part of Sub-council 3.
He later told Tabletalk that he had noted how diverse the area was while familiarising himself with the issues in the various wards.
“Some of these wards have informal settlements, but others have houses and areas where people are well-off or wealthy. Diversity is the strength of this country,” he said.
Sewer blockages and overflows stood out among the service-delivery issues across the wards, he said.
“I am here to introduce a new culture to not only the councillors but to residents too to look after the infrastructure,” he said.
This is Mr Maxiti’s third term as a member of this sub-council. His first term was from 2011 to 2016 when he served as a portfolio chairperson of the City’s Homeless Agency Committee. For his second term, he served as the mayoral committee member for energy and climate change.
