MMID director of safety, security and operations, Tony Pronk; Ward 4 councillor Anthony Benadie; Neville Playton, member of Phoenix Ratepayers’ Association; MMID members and children from Phoenix and Joe Slovo Park at the Telkom Park Sports Complex in Marconi Beam, Milnerton, for Heritage Day celebrations.
The youths of Phoenix and Joe Slovo Park received a gift from the City and the Montague Gardens-Marconi Beam Improvement District (MMID) on Heritage Day, Saturday September 24.
Ward 4 councillor Anthony Benadie together with a team from the MMID cleaned, painted and fixed the club house and dressing rooms at the Telkom Sports Complex in Marconi Beam, Milnerton.
Mr Benadie said the aim of the heritage project was to give back to the community and the sporting youth from Joe Slovo Park and Phoenix. He said the infrastructure at the field was in a real need of a revamp.
In a statement, the MMID said it encourages improving the well-being of every individual in society so they can reach their full potential.
The MMID added that it believes that empowering children to play sport will teach them the value of teamwork and leadership.
MMID spokesperson, Lianne Lippert, said their decision to get involved with the project was to provide a clean and safe space for the youth of Joe Slovo and Phoenix to play. Ms Lippert said the clubhouse and toilets at the sports ground were run down.
“We thought let’s go in there and paint, let’s clean up the area and pick up all the rubbish, and feed everyone that helped,” said Ms Lippert.
She added that their other focus was to take the youth off the streets and to teach them skills.
