Ward 107 up for grabs after DA councillor quits

Ward 107, covering parts of Table View, Sunningdale and Parklands, will be up for grabs in a June by-election, following the resignation of DA councillor Nicolette Rheeder.

Ms Rheeder, who is also the Sub-council 1 chairperson, and her family will be relocating to the Netherlands, where she hopes to finish her studies in sociology.

City speaker Felicity Purchase said Ms Rheeder had sent in her resignation on Thursday March 23.

Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) spokesperson Kate Bapela confirmed that the by-election would take place in the second week of June.

Ms Rheeder said she had started in politics in 2015 as a City of Cape Town official.

“It has always been my passion to work with and in communities, and making a difference where I can, so I applied to be the councillor in Ward 107 in 2016,” she said.

Ms Rheeder held on to the ward in 2021, when she won with 81.9% of the votes, ahead of the ANC with 4.38% and the EFF with 3.8%.

Ms Rheeder thanked her constituency for its support during her two terms.

“I have gained so much knowledge across so many different sectors and had the privilege of working with some incredible people and organisations in the ward. I will never forget my my time serving Ward 107 and sub-council 1,” she said.

Fellow ward councillor and Milnerton Lions Club president Christiana Groenewoud said: “We will miss Ms Rheeder and her good ideas and intentions for the ward.”

Residents who posted on the Ward 107 Facebook page said they had “suffered a big loss” and they hoped the new councillor would be as “dedicated and organised” as Ms Rheeder had been.
