Four men robbed a Brooklyn supermarket and shot and wounded a man while trying to hijack his car to flee the scene, last week, say police.
The robbers walked into the OK Supermarket on the corner of Koeberg and Conway roads last Wednesday posing as customers, said police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg.
The men stood in the queue and then one of them pulled out a gun and held up the cashier, taking cash and cigarettes.
The robbers forced a man to get out of his Ford Figo, presumably wanting to use it as a getaway vehicle, but then they shot him and fled on foot, said Sergeant Twigg.
The perpetrators are still at large and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Maitland Community Police Forum chairman Justin Kumlehn said the community was up in arms because the robbery had happened in broad daylight.
He thanked those residents who had gone to the aid of the shooting victim as well as those who had tried to chase after the perpetrators but added: “The community should not put themselves in danger. Let law enforcement deal with such matters.”
Mr Kumlehn is also the chairman of the Brooklyn,Ysterplaat, Rugby, Ratepayers’ Association.
OK Supermarket did not respond to questions by deadline.
