Officers help Rivergate woman give birth

City Law Enforcement officers assumed midwife duties last Friday morning when they helped a woman give birth.

The officers were on patrol in Rivergate, a shanty town near Dunoon, when they came across a heavily pregnant woman lying on a gravel road, according to mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.

One of the officers, Clinton Bonke, led from the front as he and colleagues, Ayanda Sinkwane and Mongezi Masoka, took action to help the woman.

“With his encouragement, he managed to calm the distraught mother to be and guided her as she gave birth to a beautiful, bouncing baby boy at around midday,” said Mr Smith.

“Mom and baby were in good health and taken to a medical facility for observation by a family member who arrived on scene. Officer Bonke said it was an unbelievable experience under extreme circumstances, considering it was the first time he helped deliver a baby.”

Tabletalk was unable to contact Officer Bonke for comment by deadline.

“Unfortunately the officers do not have details of the family, as they were too focused on ensuring that the baby was delivered safely,” said Mr Smith.
