The new mini netball court in Bothasig’s Vryburger Park, next to the library, is drawing an enthusiastic response from the community.

The City completed the court in December last year, at a cost of more than R63 000, and at an open day there on Thursday last week, about 50 women and girls signed up to join a community netball team. Some of them expressed concern that the court might be too small for all those eager to use it.

One of the women who started the netball team, Penny Laubscher, said she wanted to find more “mommy time” this year, and she hoped netball would let her do just that.

She said new friendships had been forged during the open day.

"When Bothasig pulls together, we shoot the lights! We are overwhelmed by the tremendous response from our community. It truly showcases the power of togetherness.“

She hopes that starting the team will encourage more people to use the parks and other recreational amenities in the area.

“Many children don’t come to parks as they don’t want to be alone in the parks. This is an opportunity for adults to be there while their kids have fun, but most importantly for the community to come together and have fun.”

Some of the women have signed up to be netball coaches and umpires, but Ms Laubscher said most of them had never played the sport, and she had last played it almost 30 years ago.

“The energy and skill displayed on the court have led to a delightful predicament - the need for a bigger court, or perhaps even multiple courts,” she said.

Ward councillor Miquette Temlett said there were no immediate plans to expand the court, but that could be considered in future.

“Witnessing the fruition of a project designed to offer residents a space for relaxation and enjoyment is truly gratifying,” said Ms Temlett.

Netball sessions are held every Wednesday and Thursday at 6.30pm at Vryburger Park next to the library. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.
