Portlands Primary hosted a cancer awareness programme among teachers and pupils in conjunction with Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) on Thursday September 12.
Portlands Primary hosted its annual cancer awareness programme in partnership with Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) on Thursday September 12.
Members of CANSA Relay for Life Mitchell’s Plain shared information about childhood cancer with teachers and pupils. Johanna Henry, facilitator of the Westridge CANSA support group, presented an educational talk on being sun smart and protecting your skin against the sun.
Portland Primary pupils shared their stories of loved ones they have lost to cancer and took part in a shavathon afterwards. Some also sprayed their hair in solidarity with people who have experienced hair loss due to the disease.
The proceeds of the shavathon will go to CANSA Relay for Life Mitchell’s Plain’s annual fundraising event.
“Cansa Relay For Life is an overnight event where we celebrate and remember those we have lost to cancer and those who fought back. The event symbolises the fact that cancer doesn’t sleep and we sacrifice one night without sleep in memory of our loved ones,” explained Saadiqa Abrahams, chairperson of CANSA Relay for Life Mitchell’s Plain.
Muniera Veale, a Grade R teacher at Portland Primary, said many people in the school community are affected by cancer.
“At Portland Primary, we strive to uphold values of compassion and generosity in our community. We have engaged with the CANSA for many years to educate and bring awareness to learners as well as staff. It deeply affects many of our learners’ emotional well-being at school. We feel it’s imperative to enlighten everyone and acknowledge the devastation and emotional trauma it causes families,” said Ms Veale.
She added that the school hopes to continue its partnership with CANSA.
