Cape Flats rappers Clint van den Broeck and Riedwaan Damon have released a music video, Kaapstad, shot in Athlone.
It’s meant to show a side to Athlone other than crime and gangsterism, says Van den Broeck, of Heideveld.
And, he adds, it also pushes their belief that, “You don't have to curse in your raps to get a message across.”
Their music aims to have a positive influence on the community, he says.
“We both chose music as a career to change the narrative of how rappers are perceived, and mostly we use it to express and connect with people of all walks of life. The music video is about us representing Athlone and how we are so diverse yet relatable.”
Van den Broeck and Damon have been performing in the music industry together for a decade. They plan to release a debut album on Saturday October 26 and more music videos between now and January next year.
Damon, of Bokmakierie, says it was important for him to depict the area he grew up in and stay true to the community.
“I want to show that I am proud of where I am from and who I am, and I want our audience to be part of that in knowing that it doesn’t matter where you come from - you can achieve any and everything you set your mind to.
“Shooting the music video was so much fun for me because I got to be in control of the story and got to tell it the way I wanted to, which needed to be in correlation with the song. I was a blast, tiring but a blast,” he says.
They will next perform at a career day at Northlink College, in Belhar, on Wednesday October 23.
The music video is available on YouTube, Facebook, Spotify, and Instagram.
