A St Montague Village dumping spot.
Lavender Hill community leader Clive Jacobs wants to see the dumping spot on the corner of St Ambrose Circle, in St Montague Village, turned into something positive.
“The site has become a dumping haven for communities. They either forget when it is dirt collection day or they pick up their bins (and dump here). This area should be re-looked at and something positive for the community and its children created. It's unhealthy and unhygienic to live in.”
The City of Cape Town responded by saying its Urban Waste Management Cleansing Department had cleared the site.
“A ‘No Dumping’ sign will be erected. The site will also be scheduled for more regular inspection and maintenance. The area was cleaned on Tuesday February 11 using mechanical intervention.”
However, Mr Jacobs, told Southern Mail on Monday February 24 that the area was still a mess. “I just passed it now and it still looks like a dump.”
The City calls on the community to report those who are responsible for putting their health at risk by dumping. If you have the person's vehicle registration number and/or can identify them, call the City on 021 444 6231or 021 444 6224 or 021 444 6223 or email solidwaste.bylaw@capetown.gov.za
