School started with a bit of a twist for Milnerton Primary School last week as pupils ditched their traditional school bags and packs for the school's “Anything But a Bag Day”.

Pupils arrived at the gates on Monday, June 23, pushing trolleys, pulling carts, and carrying everything from pillowcases to kitchen pots and more.

Bev Haywood, the headmaster’s assistant, said the fun and imaginative event marked the culmination of a successful charity drive. Pupils were encouraged to bring R10 or more in support of Home of Hope, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to helping vulnerable, abused, abandoned, and neglected children, with a special focus on those affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

The school raised R24 000, doubling the amount raised for other charities in previous years.

The campaign was spearheaded by teacher and head of charity Carla Dukas, who inspired pupils and their parents to get involved from the start of the term. Her call to action was simple: bring a donation, and come to school with anything but a traditional school bag.

She said the school was buzzing with energy and laughter as children proudly showed off their unique creations from toy shopping trolleys and woven baskets to toolboxes and cooler boxes.

“It was a joyous celebration of creativity, all in the spirit of giving,” she said.

Eleanor Brook, the CEO of Home of Hope, visited the school with her colleagues to receive the donation in person.

Ms Brook told Tabletalk that although the children are aware the money was raised for charity, “they have no idea of the lasting impact they’ve made in other children’s lives.”

She said she is forever grateful to Milnerton Primary School for making Home of Hope a priority, adding that the group is truly moved by their generosity.

Ms Brook explained that the children in their care, many of whom live with the lifelong effects of FASD - benefit deeply from charitable drives.

“It’s in moments like these that they realise they matter,” she said.

“Because of your generosity, they have access to a loving home, specialised education, therapy, and a chance to dream a little bigger. Thank you for standing with us, you have made a lasting difference.”
