In a show of community spirit, the Burgundy Estate Padel Club in Milnerton is rallying players and the public for a charity tournament with a difference.
Set to take place on Saturday, July 19 at the Richmond Park padel courts, the event hopes to raise funds for Imagine Animal Dreams, a non-profit based in Kraaifontein that rescues and rehabilitates abused and abandoned animals.
Animal activist and padel enthusiast, Hevanya Balkaran, of Burgundy Estate, said the idea came to her in a moment of reflection.
“I remembered the organisation from some time back. I had been thinking about how I could help Imagine Animal Dreams and the amazing work it was doing. Then one day, it just clicked—why not combine my love for padel with a good cause?”
The club supported her idea, and now, 100% of the tournament’s entry fees will go directly to the animal rescue organisation.
Ms Balkaran said the club is appealing to local businesses and individuals to help cover the costs of the court rentals - and to contribute in any way they can.
“In addition to sponsorships, we’re also gratefully accepting prize vouchers or products that we can offer the winners.Sponsors are welcome to bring banners or promotional material to display on the day,” she said
The club, which began with just a handful of players, has since grown to a group of 60, she said.
The tournament welcomes players of all fitness levels and abilities, and even those who simply want to socialise are encouraged to come along, said Ms Balkaran.
“There’ll be two courts set aside for beginners and three for more experienced players,” she said.
“It’s a fun way to stay active, meet new people and support a cause that really needs us.”
The funds raised will go towards the daily care of 90 rescue dogs currently living at Elders Farm along the Old Paarl Road
The organisation’s founder, Cecilia Jacobs, said she has dedicated her life - and her own resources - to giving these animals a second chance.
“We’re constantly in need of food, flea and tick treatments, and blankets,” said Ms Jacobs.
“The three staff members on the farm currently share one Wendy house. Our dream is to eventually provide each of them with their own space,” she said.
Beyond the farm, Imagine Animal Dreams runs outreach and sterilisation projects in neighbouring areas like Wallacedene and Bloekombos, helping reduce animal suffering in some of the city’s most underserved communities.
