Twelve-year-old Thanaa Voterson will return to South Africa with the first prize gold medal and three silver medals, received at the international Mediterranean Legends singing competition held over the weekend in Spain and France.

Thanaa, the only child from Cape Town selected for the prestigious international event, dazzled audiences and judges alike with her vocals and show-stopping choreography - and brought pride home to South Africa.

The young songbird’s journey to the international stage was made possible through ten months of tireless fundraising, where her community, family, and friends rallied behind her dream, helping her raise R180,000 to fund the trip.

Speaking from Spain on Tuesday, July 22, where mother and daughter were still basking in the glow of the weekend’s success, Thanaa’s mom, Shafieka Voterson, described the moment as “unreal.”

“I’m so proud of her. And I don’t mean to sound biased, but she deserved that first prize - she didn’t miss a note. Her energy, her moves, her stage presence… she owned it,” she said.

Ms Voterson added that the entire competition had her on an emotional rollercoaster.

“Thanaa made so many friends from around the world. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience - unforgettable.”

The road wasn’t all smooth. A cancelled flight and a few last-minute hiccups nearly derailed their plans — but Thanaa’s resilience shone through

“She took everything in her stride. She’s a true inspiration,” said Ms Voterson.

When asked what the future holds, Ms Voterson said she’s excited for what lies ahead, but is determined to keep her daughter grounded. “She’s the next big thing, I have no doubt. But I also want to protect her - she’s not a prize horse to parade around. Her happiness comes first.”

Thanaa herself called the experience “amazing” and said the international friendships she’s formed will stay with her forever.

“Thank you to everyone who believed in me and helped make this dream come true,” she said.
