Brandon Strydom, 18,   from Melkbosstrand is a young performer with a big dream - to study musical theatre at the New York Film Academy and to perform on Broadway.

After years of hard work and local success, he’s now calling on the public to help him make his dream a reality.

Originally from Durban, Brandon began acting at just six years old at the Westville Theatre Club.

His passion grew quickly - by age 11, he directed his first play and was later asked to direct two more before turning 14.

“Theatre has always been part of my life. I was also in the choir and took drama as a subject,” he said.

Three years ago, Brandon’s family relocated to Cape Town, where he joined Parklands College and began taking professional acting and vocal training.

He performed in school musicals and competed in the Western Cape Musical Eisteddfod, where he received glowing feedback.

Encouraged by his vocal coach, he entered the South African Championships for Performing Arts in 2024 and later Show Your Talent South Africa, earning three gold medals, second place in acting, top five vocalist, and SACOPA Provincial Colours in Acting.

These achievements earned him a spot representing South Africa at the Talent America Finals in Manhattan, New York, in July 2025, where he was the youngest competitor among performers from over ten countries.

Brandon took first place in all his entered categories - including comedic and dramatic monologue, vocal Broadway, and vocal singer’s choice - and won the Overall Division Award and Pinnacle Award for the highest combined score in his age group.

“This opportunity changed my life and opened up a world of possibilities. It was my first time abroad and nerve-wracking, but I felt proud to represent South Africa,” he said.

As part of his achievement, Brandon received a partial scholarship to study for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre at the New York Film Academy.

However, the scholarship covers only 50% of his tuition, leaving him to raise R1.8 million to fund the remaining costs.

So far, his BackaBuddy campaign has raised R800.

“I want to inspire others to go for their dreams. Hard work shows people what you’re capable of — never back down and stay consistent,” said Brandon.
