The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has announced a programme of roadworks to install new traffic-calming measures and construct additional footways across several neighbourhoods, including Milnerton, Melkbosstrand, Parklands, Table View, and Atlantis.
The City's mayoral committee member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, said the initiative forms part of the City’s continued efforts to improve pedestrian and road safety, particularly near schools, parks, and community facilities where vulnerable road users are most at risk.
Work began on Thursday, November 6, and is expected to continue until Friday, April 24, next year, weather permitting.
“These traffic-calming measures and new footways reflect our ongoing commitment to safer neighbourhoods. Residents may experience some noise and temporary traffic disruptions while the works are underway, and we thank the community for its patience and cooperation during this time,” said Mr Quintas.
Construction will take place between 7am and 5pm from Mondays to Saturdays.
He said the planned improvements include the installation of speed humps, raised intersections, and pedestrian walkways in key residential areas.
In Milnerton, speed humps will be installed along Oxalis Street, with a raised intersection at Mimosa Street and Ixia Road.
Melkbosstrand will see new speed humps along Drommedaris Street, while Parklands will have similar features in Deptford Crescent and Beacon Road, as well as a raised intersection at Humewood Drive and Torquay Close.
In Table View, speed humps will be constructed along Shetland Road, Pinto Road, Plover Street, Hutchison Avenue, and Palomino Road.
Atlantis will see extensive works, with speed humps to be added along Antelope Avenue, Addison Avenue, Bentos Street, Adriatic Avenue, Bengal Street, Bon Aventura Avenue, Dahlia Street, Cosmos Street, Keria Avenue, Starling Road, and Patrys Street.
New pedestrian footways will also be built in Atlantis along Patrys Street, Bottle Brush Street, Lisboa Street, Matheran Street, Middelburg Street, and Tsitsa Street.
The City has urged motorists and residents to exercise caution when travelling through affected areas and to follow temporary signage while construction is in progress.
