Members of the De Grendel Lions Club were given an unexpected boost at the Lions District 410W mid-year conference in Paarl on Friday, November 28.

The club walked away with five awards for the years 2024 and 2025 Lions year, presented by former District Governor José Braga Borges.

The club received recognition as a Top 6 Club, while president Glenda Hon and Lion secretary Yolanda de Jager were each named among the Top 6 President and Top 6 Secretary awardees, respectively.

The club also earned the Most Improved Club award, and Lion Malcolm McCallum received the Membership Chairperson Award.

Ms Hon said she and the members present were “totally bowled over”, even though none of them had anticipated such widespread acknowledgement.

She credited the awards to the positivity and commitment of club members, noting their willingness to “roll up their sleeves” and step in where the community needs support.

She also highlighted that three De Grendel Lions currently serve on the District 410W cabinet: Lion Yolanda de Jager as district chairperson for the Lions Peace Poster Programme, Lion Malcolm McCallum as zone chairperson for Zone 9, and Lion Jacques Mostert as district chairperson for Specialty Clubs.

Ms Hon expressed her gratitude to the community and partner organisations for their ongoing support, saying that additional members would allow the club to expand its outreach.

She encouraged interested residents to contact the De Grendel Lions Club at 083 554 0004 or email degrendellions@gmail.com

During a recent club visit, current District Governor Bevil Lackay praised the club’s long-standing commitment to service.

“For more than half a century, the Lions Club of De Grendel have been touching lives, giving hope, and showing the true meaning of serving with heart. Tonight’s General Business Meeting was nothing short of vibrant and uplifting. Your energy, passion, and commitment to service reminded me once again of the impact you continue to make in your community. De Grendel Lions, your history is powerful, your impact is real, and your future is brighter than ever,” he said.

Ms Hon said that while the club was deeply honoured by the awards and appreciative of the District Governor’s comments, members remained focused on what they do best: serving the community and demonstrating that “kindness really does matter”.
