The sound of children’s laughter and excited screams drowned out the revving of motorbike engines as Santa Claus made his way into Edgemead on Saturday, December 13.

For the past four years, Edgemead resident Angelique Pretorius has baked large quantities of sweet treats and hosted a festive celebration for families in the area, giving the community the chance to welcome Santa on his annual visit from the North Pole.

At Saturday’s event, Father Christmas danced in the streets while children and parents joined in the celebrations, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.

Ms Pretorius said the initiative began after the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions were lifted. Wanting to bring joy to children who had spent long periods confined to their homes, she decided to organise an event where they could come together to greet Santa.

Since then, the celebration has grown bigger each year.

She said the most rewarding part of hosting the event is seeing the children’s faces light up when Father Christmas arrives.

“This is a project very close to my heart, and I will continue giving back to the community for as long as I can,” she said.

Steelwings Cape Town, the Beyond Wild Bikers Club, Harley Haven SA, and several other biking clubs joined forces to help make the day a success.

Neave Kannemeyer, also known as “Dr Love” and a member of the Steelwings Cape Town, said the clubs are involved in various charity initiatives throughout the year and are now in their fourth year of hosting the Santa drive for the children and residents of Edgemead.

He said it is always special to see families and children come out to welcome Father Christmas into their neighbourhood.

“It is such an amazing feeling to give back to communities, not only in Edgemead but also in other communities that we serve,” said Ms Kannemeyer.

As a token of appreciation, Dr Love handed over an undisclosed amount of money to Ms Pretorius, who became emotional and was comforted by Father Christmas.
