A 35-year-old father was shot dead in broad daylight in Rugby, Milnerton, while on his way to collect his children from school.
Milnerton police have opened a murder investigation following the shooting in Albow Road at about 12.40pm on Thursday, February 12.
According to provincial police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the victim was walking along the street when a light blue Ford Fiesta pulled up beside him.
"One of the occupants allegedly got out of the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel," he said.
He said that the motive for the attack remains unknown.
A Rugby resident, who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation, believes the killing may be gang-related. He said the victim had been fetching his children from school at the time of the shooting.
“At the time, he was collecting his children. They will forever have the memory of their dad lying there,” the resident said.
“Do these people not have a heart? This is a father of young children who was with him. They will be traumatised for life.”
The incident has once again raised concerns about ongoing violence in the area, particularly attacks carried out in full view of residents during the day.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to report anonymously via the MySAPS mobile application.
