The 1st Naruna Constantia Scout Group and 2nd Plumstead Sea Scout Group enjoyed an educational and adventure-filled outing to Intaka Island on Saturday, February 7.

Pack Scouter for 1st Naruna Constantia Scout Group, Julia Myburgh, said the young Cubs, aged between 8 and 10, spent the morning exploring the island’s scenic wetlands. They took part in a guided walk around the island to identify various bird species, with each Cub receiving a bird checklist and enthusiastically searching for different birds along the route. The island’s bird hides and viewing points provided excellent opportunities for observation, although the excitement of spotting wildlife made staying quiet a challenge.

Ms Myburgh said a boat trip was the major highlight of the day, around the island and through the surrounding canals.

“For several Cubs, it was their first time on a boat. Experienced guides shared interesting environmental facts during the trip, including the unique ability of the yellow weaver bird to tie knots when building its nest,” she said.

“Exploring nature, especially the wetlands and birds, is incredibly important for Cubs because it builds awareness, responsibility, and real-world understanding in a hands-on way,” she said.

After the boat ride, the Cubs visited the island’s education centre where the Pack Scouters taught them about environmental conservation and ways to protect natural habitats. “The session included hands-on activities such as creating nature rubbings, reinforcing the day’s learning in a fun and interactive way,” she said.

Ms Myburgh said the outing concluded with time spent exploring the old steam locomotives situated at the island’s entrance, which proved to be a popular attraction among the Cubs.
