A Bothasig man will be running the Comrades Marathon this weekend to raise money for a non-profit organisation that helps to protect the oceans.
Every step that Brian Super, 64, takes in the 90km race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, this Sunday, will help to raise money for Wild Oceans, an ocean conservation programme run by the Wildlands Conservation Trust, or Wild Trust
Mr Super, who has done the Comrades six times since 2001, says preparation for it is hard work.
“Training for a race and putting in all those early mornings and long hours is like raising a baby, and to have a baby every year is kind of insane.”
With the support of his wife, Laura Wenman, who ran her first Comrades in 1995, Brian has been training for the past nine months and running 50km in and around Cape Town every weekend.
For his sixth Comrades in 2018, he went dressed as Tarzan, and celebrated his 60th birthday. This year, Mr Super will be running in a Superman outfit and says he cannot wait to get into character.
Mr Super, an ex-surfer and oceanographic technician by profession, says he hopes to raise at least R10 000 for Wild Oceans at charity.easyreg.co.za and has so far raised R4300.
