An illegal drag race led to a car landing up in the Milnerton Lagoon at the weekend, says a man who claims to have witnessed the incident.
A Milnerton resident, Mark Swinger, said he had seen two cars racing on Marine Drive near the lagoon on Saturday night. Both vehicles had been headed towards Paarden Eiland.
“One of the two cars knocked a white hatchback that was not part of this race. The white car lost control and landed up in the water by the bridge. It was a terrible sight to see. But the driver of the car in the water reacted quickly and managed to get out of his car otherwise he could have drowned. Luckily first responders were quick on the scene,” said Mr Swinger.
City Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse, said they got the call-out just before 1am on Sunday.
“Two vehicles were involved in a collision and one of them ended up in the lagoon, close to the concrete bridge. The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries and was treated on scene by Metro EMS personnel.”
Resident Mary Hall said speeding was common in the area.
“We see this type of thing all the time: cars speeding there, especially at night because the roads are quiet and there is no traffic. But this is dangerous as these cars could hurt others or themselves – like in this recent case.”
