In an attempt to raise awareness about the critically endangered African penguin and other seabird species, the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) has launched a new coffee shop to attract visitors.
The non-profit organisation in Table View relies on donations from the public to rehabilitate the endangered bird species.
The coffee shop is in the new visitors centre, overlooking the Rietvlei Nature Reserve and offers views of Table Mountain, says Sanccob.
The R8 million visitors centre was completed earlier this year and boasts an educational facility overlooking the seabirds, information about them and displays (“Sanccob unveils R8m visitor centre,” Tabletalk, July 2024).
There are also daily guided tours of the seabird hospital.
Tours are conducted daily between 8am and 5pm. Visitor groups are limited to 10 people per group.
Bookings are essential for the tours and walk-ins will only be accommodated if space is available.
