It was a bittersweet moment for Hope House Counselling Centre founder Judy Strickland to announce, at the organisation’s 20th birthday celebrations, last week, that the Table View branch might be closing down due to financial strain.
For 20 years the non-profit has offered counselling, addiction support and training to people around the city.
The organisation, which started in the garage of a home, now has centres in Table View, Kuils River, Tokai and Khayelitsha, offering one-on-one counselling on a donation basis.
The Table View branch in South Road would close should no funding be found, Ms Strickland told the organisation’s supporters at the Century City Auditorium on Thursday August 29.
“Without strong and sustainable funding, we will be left with no choice but to shut down this centre, which has been serving the community for over five years.”
Ms Strickland said the organisation was passionate about training counsellors.
“Our substance-abuse programme in schools has delivered significant results, while our trauma-informed workshops and emotional and self-regulation sessions have transformed lives and changed the way teachers approach their students,” she said.
