Groote Schuur Hospital nurses Irene Okudoh and Buyelwa Majikela-Dlangamandla won awards at the Cecilia Makiwane and Nursing Excellence Awards held at the Western Cape College of Nursing in Heideveld on Friday October 25.
Nurse Okudoh won the Speciality Nursing award in her role as a specialist nephrology nurse while nurse Majikela-Dlangamandla, who is a diabetes clinical coordinator, won the Nursing Education and Training (Informal) award.
Nurse Okudoh, from Table View, has been at Groote Schuur for 10 years and works with those diagnosed with kidney failure.
“It is fulfilling, knowing that I come to the hospital every day to make a positive difference in the lives of people. As a nurse, it brings me joy to be there for individuals on their journeys and to help them take care of themselves.”
She thanked her family, colleagues, and the nursing management team for their encouragement.
Nurse Makiwane, from Thornton, has been at Groote Schuur for 40 years and will be retiring from the hospital this year.
“As I depart the hospital, educating individuals and health-care professionals about the risks of diabetes, early detection and the available support have been my passion for why I loved this job for many years,” she said
Groote Schuur’s director of nursing, Aghmat Mohamed said: “As Irene and Buyelwa show, our hospital’s nurses perform a wide variety of roles, often taking the lead in specific areas of care.”
