A Sunningdale man has taken it upon himself to stop people using a footpath through a field in the area as a motorcycle track.
Juan Meyer says he is tired of some of his neighbours riding their motorcycles on land behind Elkanah House Sunningdale Preparatory.
Mr Meyer said he had complained to the authorities several times without success.
“I have contacted law enforcement, Metro police and the South African Police Service on multiple occasions regarding the illegal and unlicensed vehicles being operated recklessly and at high speed in areas clearly marked for pedestrian use only,” he said.
A resident taking a stroll on the piece of land echoed Mr Meyer’s sentiments. Jean Visser lives just across the field on the opposite side of the school.
“I have been living here for the past five years now and every Saturday, I hear loud bikes riding up and down the place and it just seems to be getting worse. I would like the City to actually do something about it because there are boards here saying that these motorcycles are not allowed,” said Mr Visser.
City spokesman Luthando Tyhalibongo said law enforcement had received a complaint about a month ago, but officers had investigated and found no evidence of the alleged activities at the time, but the recreation and parks department would look at installing concrete bollards at the area’s entry and exit points.
Mr Meyer said he and his wife had raised the issue with neighbours but they had been reluctant to do anything.
“What can you do? They’re spoilt kids” had been the stock response.
“I grew up in a small community (eGcuwa in the Transkei) where consideration for your fellow man was important,” Mr Meyer said.
