Robbers, one of them armed with what looked like an AK-47 assault rifle, used explosives to blow open the back of an armoured truck at The Stables shopping centre, in Dunoon, on Thursday October 26, at 10am.
The robbers pulled up in a white Mercedes Benz, forced the guards out of the truck, blew the back door and grabbed the cash, said Table View police spokeswoman Captain Adriana Chandler.
They ditched the Mercedes – later found to have been stolen in Kuils River – and sped off in a silver Jeep without licence plates and a red Volvo.
The Jeep was found abandoned not far from the scene.
No one was injured and no shots were fired. The Hawks are investigating. Anyone with information can call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.2
* Burglars tried to break into a cellphone shop at Table Bay Mall early on Saturday October 21.
Nothing was stolen, but the shop’s security camera was damaged, said Captain Chandler.
Mall spokeswoman Karla Linder said the burglars had used a contractor’s scaffolding to get onto the roof.
The scaffolding had since been removed and all CCTV footage handed to the police, she said.
* Table View police arrested two men and seized a vehicle reported stolen in Parow earlier in the day.
Officers patrolling Raats Drive, in Parklands, on Wednesday October 25 spotted the stolen vehicle, said Captain Chandler.
