As Women’s Month wraps up, the latest installment of Kuier@TheCastle will showcase the talents local female designers and craft artisans, highlighting the contribution made by women to our creative economy.
The monthly creative and lifestyle event, hosted by the Craft + Design Institute (CDI) in collaboration with the Castle of Good Hope, will take place at the castle on Saturday August 31.
All visitors will also have access to all the Castle’s museums throughout the day.
“We invite everyone to come meet phenomenal female designers and artisans, discover their beautiful products and show their support for local,” said Fran Stewart, market development programme manager at the CDI.
She added that, since the launch of monthly event in February, it has supported more than 170 small- and medium-sized enterprises, contributing over R800 000 in trade value to the local economy.
The August workshops include ones on crochet, a micro-mosaic jewellery workshop, make your own painted tote bag, a tatting and beadwork workshop at which you can make your own earrings, a self-portrait drawing workshop, a creative candle workshop, and one which explores the craft of tufting.
For ceramics lovers, renowned South African ceramist John Bauer will present an insightful talk and tour of the Iziko Ceramic Museum in the afternoon.
Book for these workshops on Quicket.
Throughout the day there will also be special workshops for children.
Adding to the celebration of Women’s Month with style, local designer Thabo Makhetha will host two fashion shows at noon and 1.30pm, showcasing the latest trends at her LuxLane pop-up boutique.
Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of the Castle Control Board, said: “An additional attraction this Women’s month is an exquisite exhibition by local artist Chantal Coetzee.
“Dubbed African Queens: Rewriting history, this visual art exhibition, on display inside the Castle’s Good Hope Gallery, celebrates and honours the life and times of African warrior queens who gallantly fought armed colonial conquest on the continent. This must-see collection runs until 30 September and Kuier@TheCastle guests will be able to meet the artist in person.“
Kuier@TheCastle will take place from 10am to 4pm. Entry is R30 for adults, R15 for children and pensioners, and children under the age of seven years old enter free.
