Another soccer club from Hanover Park has set its sight on Safa Cape Town’s Coke Cup.
Leeds United have reached the round of 64 of the much sought after title in local football.
Last year’s winner Diadora and former winners Hanover Park as well Premier United all hail from the suburb.
Diadora, who have won back-to-back titles, in 2022 and 2023, are not participating in the senior division of this year’s competition after they also won promotion to Safa Cape Town’s regional Third Division.
On Sunday, United clipped the southern suburbs based Eagle Wings FC’s wings 4-2 in their round of 128 at the Rooikrans sports ground in a keenly contested match.
Down 0-2 at the break, United fought back bravely with second half strikes from Levi Benjamin, Gershwin Wheeler, Shagen Le Fluer and Zakier Wippenaar clinching the match for the visitors. “Im super proud of the boys,” was all coach Damain Thomas could utter as players wildly celebrated around after the final whistle.
“We could only manage to advance to the second round of the second-round last season. But we are better organised and we played well today. I’m really super proud of what the boys achieved today,” he added.
Eagle Wings, who are coached by former local star player Declyn John, played well in the first half with John’s son Zico scoring the opening goal via a cracking shot from the edge of Leeds's penalty area. Duwayne Davids added the second against the run of play.
Decklyn said afterwards: “I just can't believe we threw the game away in this fashion.”
