The countdown to one of the world’s most challenging and prestigious ocean races has begun, and with it comes exciting news: Alexforbes has been announced as the headline sponsor for the Cape2Rio 2025.
This iconic transatlantic race, now in its 18th edition over a 54-year history, will see elite sailors and yachts take on the gruelling 3,300-nautical-mile journey from Table Bay, Cape Town, to Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro.
Set to commence on 27 December 2025, Cape2Rio 2025 is expected to feature approximately 30 entries, predominantly from South Africa and South America. So far, 11 teams have already confirmed their participation, with international entries still open.
The race, known for its endurance-testing conditions, typically takes about a month to complete, though the record time stands at an astonishing seven days, 20 hours, 24 minutes, and 44 seconds, set in 2020 by the trimaran LoveWater, skippered by Capetonian Craig Sutherland.
A Shared Vision of Excellence and Performance
As a company renowned for guiding South Africans toward their investment goals for 90 years, Alexforbes sees a strong alignment between its philosophy and the spirit of Cape2Rio. The company emphasises disciplined teamwork, strategic planning, and the pursuit of peak performance —values that mirror the qualities needed to compete in this race.
Viresh Maharaj, an executive at Alexforbes, shared his enthusiasm:
“Alexforbes has helped South Africans navigate towards their investment goals for nearly a century. We are proud to sponsor this iconic race as a reflection of our shared commitment to world-class performance, made accessible to South Africans from all walks of life.”
Vitor Medina, Chairperson of the Cape2Rio Race, highlighted the significance of the sponsorship:
“The Cape2Rio race has a storied legacy that transcends borders, bringing together sailors from diverse backgrounds to share in the spirit of adventure and competition. As we prepare for the 2025 race, we welcome Alexforbes as our headline sponsor.
“Their commitment to inclusivity aligns perfectly with our vision. Together, we aim to celebrate the tradition of this legendary race and inspire future generations of sailors to take on this extraordinary journey across the Atlantic.”
Supporting the Next Generation: The Alexforbes Angel Wings Team
Beyond sponsoring the Cape2Rio race itself, Alexforbes is also investing in the future of South African sailing. The company is backing the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) Sailing Academy team, which will compete in the 2025 edition of the race aboard the Alexforbes Angel Wings, a recently acquired 39-foot Lightwave Oyster yacht.
This initiative follows the success of the Alexforbes ArchAngel crew, which secured a podium finish in the 2023 race. The new team comprises young, promising sailors from economically disadvantaged communities, selected for their talent and dedication to the sport.
Over the next year, they will undergo intensive training in teamwork, endurance, and racing strategy, with a particular focus on integrating skilled female sailors based on their performance.
Sibusiso Sizatu, Senior Instructor at the RCYC Sailing Academy, expressed his passion for mentoring the next generation:
“Preparing the next crew for the race is incredibly special to me. My journey in sailing has been transformative, opening doors I never imagined possible. I want to share that experience with the new generation, helping them navigate the challenges and triumphs of ocean racing.
“This adventure is not just about the race; it’s about building character, fostering lifelong skills, and creating experiences that can change lives. I’m excited to guide them as they embark on this incredible journey.”
Founded in 2012, the RCYC Sailing Academy has become a cornerstone of opportunity for young sailors in Cape Town. The academy not only equips them with technical sailing skills but also fosters essential life skills that can shape their futures both on and off the water.
With a rigorous training schedule already in place, the Alexforbes Angel Wings crew is gearing up to make history in Cape2Rio 2025.
