Cape Town BMX stars secure spots at world champs

Junior BMX riders who competed in the Velosolutions Pump Track World Championship qualifier at the weekend.

Generation Schools Sandown campus played host to the UCI Velosolutions Pump Track World Championship qualifier this past weekend.  

The qualifiers took place on Sunday, April 13, drawing in BMX riders from all over the country, all eager to earn a spot in the world championship finals happening later this year. 

The junior competition was especially exciting and fiercely contested, with local riders putting on a dominant display.  

Race organiser Tom Hendry said: "It's a great opportunity for the local riders to compete for a place at the world championship finals in Europe later this year." 

In the under-10 category, Mason Hendry took top spot, while Cruz Hendry claimed victory in the under-13 category. William Nelson brought it home in the under-17 division. All three riders have now secured their place at the Junior World Championships in Denmark later this year.

Other Cape Town-based juniors who qualified include Rayaan Wormald (under-8), Seth Greybe-Smith (under-9), Noah Rademeyer (under-10), Dylan Wiggill (under-14), Ovayo Ntsenge (under-15), and Joshua Milsom (under-16).

In the elite male category, Chilean rider Sebastian Mendez took the win, saving his fastest lap for the end of the day.  

On the women’s side, South African Olympian Miyanda Maseti impressed with a strong performance to claim the top spot.  

Both elite riders now move on to compete for the prestigious rainbow jersey in Switzerland this September.
