The result at the weekend might not have gone his way, but Nic Laubscher is still upbeat about what he can offer inside the cage.
The young Edgemead-based fighter continues to show signs of growth and maturity each time he steps in to compete. At the weekend, during the Undisputed MMA Championships in Kenwyn, Laubscher clashed with Reuben Job for the Bantamweight title in the promotion’s first installment.
The fight itself delivered exactly as expected. Both athletes are regarded as two of the most exciting prospects in the amateur ranks, and they proved why once again.
Their styles, pace, and willingness to engage had the Oaklands High School crowd fully invested from the opening bell.
In the end, though, there was no champion crowned. Job missed weight by a kilo, which meant the title could not be handed to him even after the win. It was a disappointing detail for both fighters, especially given the effort they put into the five-round battle.
But Laubscher and Job handled the situation in the manner of people who understand the bigger picture.
Before the fight, Laubscher had already mentioned that winning and losing at this stage is part of the long-term process.
For him, amateur MMA is about sharpening his skill set, learning under pressure, and preparing himself properly for a professional career. The weekend performance, despite the results, showed glimpses of his fight toughness and composure.
