Surrounding communities play an integral role in supporting road running, especially in club-level races.
That was certainly the case over the weekend at the Timbercity Red Hill Marathon, hosted by Fish Hoek Athletics Club.
Club chairman Mark Jacobs expressed his gratitude for the large number of volunteers who helped make the 49th edition of the race such a success.
More than 300 volunteers took to the streets along the race route, lending a helping hand and ensuring the smooth running of the event.

Jacobs emphasised that the race would not be possible without the community, saying the runners themselves rely on volunteers to make the day run seamlessly.
“We had over 300 volunteers, and we are very grateful for their support. The community, especially the local schools, played a spirited role,” Jacobs said.
He highlighted the involvement of Bay Primary School and Peak Academy, both of which have been instrumental in supporting the marathon.
Jacobs also acknowledged the contribution of volunteer firefighter services, whose support ensured safety along the route.
The response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, both at the finish line and across social media platforms.
This feedback reflects Jacobs’ belief in the importance of community involvement in making local events like the Redhill Marathon a continued success.
