A world-class cycling facility is set to return to the community as Crosswinds Pumptrack in Parklands North prepares to reopen after eight months of closure.

Located at Generations Schools Sandown, the Velosolutions-built track quickly became a popular weekend hub when it first opened in December 2020, drawing riders and skaters from across Cape Town.

Now, the facility has come full circle, with Stephen Wiggill stepping in to manage and maintain the pumptrack as it prepares to welcome the public once again in the coming weeks.

The project’s roots stretch back to the 2020 lockdown, when Generations Schools founder Jevron Epstein approached the cycling community for advice on a bike facility that could serve the area. The answer was a maintenance-free asphalt pumptrack, a flowing, rollercoaster-style circuit designed to build skill, confidence and fitness without the need for pedalling.

Since its launch, Crosswinds has stood out as a unique training and recreation space, offering opportunities for riders of all ages and abilities.

Safety and confidence-building remain central to the facility’s design, with a dedicated mini-track created specifically for toddlers and young beginners.

The smaller rollers and gentle berms provide a safe space for balance bike riders and first-time cyclists to learn the fundamentals of bike control.

For older children, teenagers and adults, the 173-metre advanced track is the main attraction. Its technical layout offers a chance to sharpen cornering speed, develop upper-body strength and build the “flow” skills valued by BMX, mountain bike and cross-country riders.

Beyond performance benefits, the track provides a healthy outdoor space where young riders can stay active and connect with the cycling community.

Wiggill, who has spent more than a decade in the bicycle industry, says he is eager to see the facility buzzing again. Plans are already in place to host events and open the venue for party bookings once the relaunch date is confirmed.
