Hamilton Rugby Football Club extended the lead to 56 points between them and bottom of the log CPUT Rugby Club in this season’s Super League A.
Hammies beat St George’s 20-11, at the Hamilton Rugby Club in Green Point, on Saturday, August 3, to make it 57 points after 12 matches unbeaten at the top.
Eight points behind Hammies is Union-Milnerton (Uni-Mil) on 49 points. In their bag of giant slayers this season, Uni-Mil downed False Bay 13-21, at the Phillip Herbstein Field, in Constantia, on Saturday.
The victory moved Uni-Mil to 10 wins in 13 games, while False Bay dropped to sixth position, on 35 points.
Equal with Uni-Mil is Durbanville-Bellville (Durbell) Rugby Club. Durbell clinched a 20-15 victory over Stellenbosch University, at the Danie Craven Stadium, on July 31.
In Claremont, it was a battle for fourth and fifth position between Villagers Rugby Club and Tygerberg Rugby Club this past weekend.
A good game of rugby between the two sides saw a spoil of six tries and six conversions between the two. Successful kicking by flyhalf, Devon Lailvaux added 15 points for Villager. He converted three penalties to win the match 30-21 against Tygerberg.
Although they remain equal on 39 points, the win moved Villager to seven wins in 12 matches.
Nonetheless, Tygerberg’s danger man and on-form kicker, Adrian Roberts leads the individual points summit with 113 points scored this season. He has been converting the majority of the tries scored by the leader of that category, which happens to be his teammate, winger, Brandon Collins with nine tries this season.
In second and third position for the most points scored so far this season, are Wynand Maclachlan from Hammies and Devon Lailvaux, from Villager, with 93 points each.
Helderberg (34), St George’s (26), UCT (23) and Brackenfell (21) make the bulk of the Super League A midsection standings.
Brackenfell’s 40-5 win over CPUT moved them to four wins in 12 matches this season. A couple of points behind Brackies is neighbours, Kuils River on 18 points.
SK Walmer (14) and NTK (13) have won two matches each this season. At the end of July, Kuils River edged an 18-15 win over NTK, at the Jagtershof Sports Grounds.
With one point to their tally, CPUT will be on the hunt for their first win in the Super League A this week with matches against False Bay on Wednesday night, August 7, and Villager, on Saturday afternoon, August 10.
Durbell host SK Walmer on Wednesday, at 9pm.
With the Super League A summit reaching its business end in October, teams will look to gear up and strengthen their positions on the standings.
Following a 43-34 defeat to UCT this past weekend, Helderberg will look to bounce back to winning ways when they host NTK at the Charles Morkel Stadium on Saturday, August 10.
UCT will travel up to Stellies, Kuils River will host Tygerberg, Brackies host St George’s and Uni-Mil are on a bye, on Saturday, August 10.
