Cape Town has a new South African champion in Lwando Mgabi, who delivered a commanding performance against seasoned fighter, Sihle Jelwana, at the Sunningdale Sports Complex on Friday night.
After a gruelling 12 rounds, Mgabi easily got the nod from the judges as he secured a unanimous decision victory, moving his impressive record to 7-0 including two stoppages.
The newly crowned king of the Junior Bantamweight expressed his joy and desire to keep going for better results.
He said he doesn’t plan on sitting on his laurels even though he has bagged the title he wanted. He aims to be back in action before the year ends and go for another title.
Mgabi has always believed he belonged among the SA elite, and winning the title on Friday night was just another step toward fulfilling his bigger dreams.
“I feel very happy becoming a South African champion because I’ve always wanted this at an early age,” he said reflecting on his long-standing ambition.
The bout, staged by Jackie Brice Promotions, saw Mgabi flawlessly executing his game plan.
He says he was prepared for the full 12 rounds, and his strategy paid off.
The event also featured a thrilling supporting bout where the “Prince” stepped up to showcase his boxing skills.
Asekho Nocele captured the WBF Intercontinental Bantamweight title in a fight that again showcased his immense talent.
Known as one of the hottest prospects in boxing today, Nocele delivered a master-class performance against Ayanda Gangqa in their 10-round fight.
Referee Elroy Marshall stopped the bout in the final round, giving Nocele a fourth stoppage in his just six fights.
Post-fight, Nocele was ecstatic stating that: “I felt great. The fight went exactly how we planned it.”
Having Colin Nathan and his partner Larry Wainstein of Boxing 5 at ringside served as additional motivation for the young fighter.
Nathan was thoroughly impressed by Nocele’s technique and composure, noting how the 20-year-old meticulously picked his shots while avoiding damage.
Originally planned to fight on October 19, Nocele adapted to a last-minute change of plans that brought his fight date closer.
However, his preparation showed, as he spent most of his time honing his skills in the gym. “There was no telling that the fight would come sooner than originally planned; I’m always ready,” he said.
