Two years after taking up cycling, it appears that young Parklands star Spencer van Zyl has made an excellent sporting choice.
At just 12 years old, Spencer has already established himself as a national champion, triumphing at the SA Road Championships just a week ago.
The Sunningdale pupil competes in various disciplines within the under-13 category and is now proudly holding titles in the SA Road Championship, the SA Time Trial, and the SA Criterium Championship.
Not one to rest on his laurels after recently claiming the SA crown, this ambitious young cyclist is setting his sights even higher.
His ultimate goal is to compete in the prestigious Tour de France, where he dreams of racing alongside cycling legends.
One rider he particularly admires is Tadej Pogačar, the current world champion and multiple Tour de France winner.
Given the local accolades he’s already amassed, Spencer believes that sharing the road with cycling champions could become a reality sooner rather than later.
For now, however, he remains focused on maximising his achievements at home.
His next target is the Western Cape Track Championship title, which will take place at the Velodrome in Bellville on the weekend of October 19 and 20.
Among his highlights so far, Spencer has completed the Cape Town Cycle Tour, finishing the challenging 109km course in an impressive 4 hours and 8 minutes.
He has also earned Western Province colours and Cross Country colours, along with several other accolades, as he continues to chase his cycling dreams and carve out a bright future in the sport.
