Tamica Simon,12, from Bothasig, is set to represent South Africa at the prestigious World Dance Competition in Burgos, Spain, taking place from Thursday, July 3, to Friday July 13, and needs help raising funds to get her there.
“I felt extremely proud of myself when I found out I had been selected for the international dance competition. I jumped up and down with excitement when I heard the news,” said Tamica.
And while she dreams of becoming a professional dancer, that dream still hangs in the balance as she needs to raise R50,000 to cover the costs of her trip to Spain.
Tamica started dancing at the age of five and quickly fell in love with hip-hop - a style she now "specialises in".
With a rigorous dance schedule—practicing five, sometimes six days a week—Tamica said she is placing her “trust in the Lord” that her hard work will pay off.
Although she admits she gets nervous performing in front of large crowds, she said her love for dancing is unwavering, regardless of the competition results. "Dancing allows me to express myself,” she said.
Her mother, Nicole Tudge, who is a single parent and Tamica's biggest supporter, said she has made countless sacrifices to support her daughter’s passion—giving up weekends, time, sleep, and every spare cent. “Dance is not cheap – it involves costumes, transport, and competition fees – but every cent has been worth it to see the light in Tamica’s eyes when she dances.”
She added that the upcoming trip is one of Tamica’s biggest dreams yet and hopes that with enough support, it can become a reality. “I’ve done everything in my power to make it happen. I’ve sold raffle tickets, written sponsorship letters, asked family and friends, and even tried to borrow money when that didn’t work out.
"I’ve explored every possible avenue because I truly believe this opportunity could change her life," she said.
Adding to the excitement, she said one of the judges at the competition will be Abby Lee Miller—the dance coach Tamica has idolised since she first watched reality show Dance Moms at the age of four. "Meeting her would be a dream come true for Tamica."
Tamica said this will be her first time traveling abroad, and she is looking forward not only to exploring a new part of the world, but also to meeting and connecting with fellow dancers—especially kids her age who share her passion.
