Van der Merwe takes to the track at Killarney

World famous race and rally car driver, Sarel van der Merwe, takes clerk of the course, Brian Hoskins, for a spin in one of the VW Golf rally cars he drove during his hey day as South Africa's foremost rally driver.

World-famous race and rally car driver, Sarel van der Merwe, popped in at Saturday's regional race meet at Killarney. Nicknamed "Supervan", Van der Merwe won the South African Rally Drivers Championship a record eleven times in 1975, from 1977 to 1985, and in 1988. He also held the SA Saloon Car Championship in 1994, the SA Modified Saloon Car Championship (1994 and 2001), and won the 1996 Castrol International Rally. He was awarded the Motorsport South Africa (MSA) Lifetime Achievement award in 2002.

Jess Hugget, famous for his Goodwood stock car racing years ago, takes to the track at at Saturday's regional race at Killarney. Still racing strong at 70, Hugget seen here behind the wheel of car number 70, which coincidentally is the same as his age.
