The 2024 State of the Cruise Industry Report, released by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), paints an optimistic picture for the cruise sector, with a forecast of at least 10% growth in global cruise capacity from 2024 to 2028.
The report reveals that cruise tourism is not just surviving but thriving, rebounding more swiftly than other forms of travel and tourism.
In 2023, cruise travel reached an impressive 107% of pre-pandemic levels, with a staggering 31.7 million passengers taking to the seas.
In contrast, overall international tourism arrivals remain 12% lower than in 2019, showcasing the cruise industry's resilience. Looking ahead, CLIA predicts that by 2025, the number of cruise passengers will soar to nearly 37.1 million, signifying a robust recovery and continual evolution of the industry.
As we move into the 2025 cruise season, several trends are emerging that highlight the shifting demographics and preferences within the cruising community.
New-to-cruise travellers
A significant surge in first-time cruisers is underway, with 71% of international travellers expressing interest in embarking on their maiden voyage.
In the last two years, 27% of those who cruised were newbies, marking a notable 12% increase compared to the previous two-year period.
Millennials and Gen Z on the rise
Younger generations are making waves in the cruise market, with millennials representing 22% of all passengers in 2023 and Gen Z accounting for 14%.
Notably, 81% of millennials who have taken a cruise intend to do so again, while between 8-13% of cruise travellers embark on their journeys solo.
Multi-generational travel
Cruises are increasingly appealing to families, with one-third of families sailing with at least two generations aboard. An impressive 28% of cruise travellers enjoy voyages that include three to five generations.

The top reasons for choosing a cruise highlight its exceptional value, with 11% of cruise travellers stating they only considered cruises for their holidays this year.

More than two-thirds (73%) of cruise travellers credit travel advisers as having a significant impact on their decision to cruise, emphasising the value of expert knowledge and personalised service in a complex travel landscape.

With over 100 accessible shore excursions now available, the industry is prioritising accessibility, as evidenced by the 45% of cruise travellers who booked an accessible shore excursion in the past year.
