UWC alumna leading the charge in sustainable medical apparel
Cape Town - In a world increasingly aware of the impact of fashion on the environment, one UWC graduate is making waves in the industry by merging style with sustainability.
Genevieve Gani, a physiotherapist turned entrepreneur, is at the forefront of this movement with her innovative brand, DAYMADE (PTY) LTD.
Based in Cape Town, Gani's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and creativity, as she transforms traditional medical apparel into functional yet stylish garments that prioritise comfort and environmental consciousness.
With a rich background in both healthcare and the arts, Gani's unique perspective is redefining what it means to wear clothing that not only looks good but also feels good and does good for the planet.
"Representing South Africa taught me perseverance and a strong work ethic. These lessons now fuel my passion for blending science and creativity in my work," said the young entrepreneur.
The brand’s offerings are garments and tools that enhance physical well-being while celebrating individuality and sustainability.
DAYMADE’s flagship medical apparel line caters to healthcare professionals. “Healthcare workers spend long hours on their feet, and they deserve clothing that supports their needs while reflecting their professionalism.
“Beyond medical wear, the brand offers gym apparel, zero-waste couture, and custom corporate branding products,’ Gani explained.
Gan started with no prior knowledge of garment-making or material selection and began an intensive self-learning journey - watching tutorials, taking online courses, and experimenting with designs.
“It was daunting. But, every challenge strengthened my confidence and deepened my understanding of the business. Learning every detail from scratch helped me appreciate the value of every role in the company.”
Gani’s determination bore fruit when DAYMADE secured second place in the prestigious Old Mutual x UWC Business Plan Competition, a milestone that validated her hard work and vision.
“DAYMADE is more than a clothing brand; it’s a movement toward conscious living. The brand’s ethos empower individuals to “feel good, look good, and make choices that are kind to the planet. Our garments represent a commitment to ethical labour practices and environmental stewardship.
“Every step, no matter how difficult, has shaped DAYMADE into what it is today. This brand is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that no dream is too big if you’re willing to endure the race for it,” she said.
